Oh my goodness!! We are getting SO CLOSE to calling for our final inspection.
We just have to complete all the railing, one small part of our kitchen and then we can call the county.
In this episode, you get to watch us complete a very small deck off of the back of our house.
I’ll be real with you, this deck is SO small that it may not be used for anything other than a bird feeder and bird bath, BUT putting this deck together was so satisfying, and I’m sure watching it will be amazing, too.
There’s nothing better than a project that can be completed in 2 days!
************************************************************
And now a little back story on us, in case you just found us on UA-cam. We’re Sara and Ryan. We are your average suburban family, but 10 years ago, we purchased a raw piece of land in the Hood Canal in Washington. We’ve been developing this piece of property slowly, and this year we knew it was time to go all in. So we purchased a log cabin kit home and decided that 2020 would be the year we built a house on our property. We plan to build this cabin (as much as we can) on our own.
Unfortunately, some unforeseen events in 2020 that were completely out of our hands put a delay on our cabin kit being produced and delivered in the time frame we had originally planned. While we could have just waited it out and pushed back starting on the build of our home, we decided to shift gears and change our course for the time being. We purchased a 30 foot yurt, and will be setting it up as additional living space when we begin to build our cabin.
In the summer of 2021, we FINALLY moved to the Hood Canal so we could start the build of our future home. While we are building our home, we are living in a camper trailer and the yurt that we built in the summer of 2020. We hope to have our cabin kit home built by the end of 2023. Just my husband and I are building the house. We get help here and there from friends along the way and we do plan to get help on the roof but other than that we are doing it all on our own.
Follow along with us as we build our dream in the Hood Canal.

We’ve been running up and down our stairs without railing for about 2 years now. Before that we were climbing a ladder from the main floor to the loft so honestly, stairs without railing were a major upgrade. But now we’re elevating this space and really taking it from a build site to a future family home. Follow along as complete our stair railing. And now a little back story on us, in case yo...

In June of 2021, we started building our own house. As we get closer and closer to June 2024, we are starting to feel like we just might really live in this house one day. In all honesty, we thought this house build would take us around 1 year, and we couldn’t have been more off in our time estimation. But… I keep reminding myself that everything will happen in the time that it is supposed to h...

Lately, on the build, it feels like we are running a race . . . But the problem is that if feel like the finish line keeps moving. We accomplish one task, and think, “There! Now we are closer to finishing the build.” But then, another task pops up. It’s frustrating, but the only thing we can keep doing is keep showing up. The truth of it is, there is a defined finish line, and we can clearly se...

      Yes. Ryan (my husband) is a real estate agent, and I run an online educational business that I’ve grown a LOT while we’ve been building. This means we both get to be flexible hours so we don’t work the traditional 40 hours a week, but even both worked the whole time we’ve been building. We’ve also run our clothes whole time we’ve been building which brings in a small income as well.

    Hi I did not see how you secured your support post to the deck's base but watching how you secured the balcony using structural screws , however, I think you should use bolts which will transfer any lateral pressure to the structure rather than the screws which will eventualy come loose and render the deck railing hazardous and eventually fail or you having to go through the same process again.

      @OneFootOfftheGrid 8 днів тому

      Well, when we call, we'll call for our "final inspection", but we know that we don't have everything we need in order to get the FINAL okay, BUT they will give you a "temporary" okay to live in the house. Did explain that so it made sense? It is a little confusing, and something I never knew about until I was building a house.

    Sorry i did not watch the full video. I've missed some part in the video, so my question is did you charge refreegerant in the compressor and vacuum the air out of the line, and what is the long white line you ran under your desk? Thank you

      The lines from Mr. Cool come pre-charged so there is no need to vacuum. The white part under the deck were the compressor linesets.

    Have really enjoyed watching your progress almost from the beginning. Partly because we too have a yurt and we are your neighbors in north Idaho. One point to add...you might consider adding some on-edge product, say a two-by-four or something similar to the underside of your top rail as it will most definitely sag with time. It will also give it more rigidity.
